Boston Trip

Remember that time we went to Boston 8 months ago? Well, as it turns out, I might not remember it either so I figured now was a good time to document it. Steve's oldest brother and his family were living in Boston until August of this year when they moved to Florida. We were living in South Carolina at the time, so I packed my bag based on southern spring weather not so-cold-it-causes-male-infertility weather. If Boston's weather is anything like hell, I swear I will be good the rest of my life. It was obviously a huge change for me because we were living in Texas for 4 years when the summers do this to you:
I hope my mom is reading this
Anyway, one of my favorite things we did was go to a Boston Red Sox game even though it was 40 degrees and raining outside. This a picture of me wearing 3 coats. I took the beanie and 3 hoods off for this picture. If it hadn't been so cold we might have made it past the 7th inning, but hypothermia is not my thing.

We also got to visit Harvard and rub John Harvard's statue for luck. We waited until other people went first because my sister once went with some coworkers from a summer camp and one of the ladies rubbed the foot which was covered in vaseline.

We also did this boat tour that was very interesting, but again very cold and I couldn't feel my legs for most of it. We got off the boat to walk up to Bunker Hill, which looked really close but as it turns out it wasn't. And it didn't help our situation that after our boat tour I found out Mike's Pastry was half a mile away and I convinced them that we should get dessert even though children were crying and my legs were numb.

We enjoyed our trip, but realized I can never live above Virginia. Steve, on the other hand, thought the cold weather was amazing.
I see where Steve gets his looks.
Shade, the dog I used to warm up my feet.

GoPro: April 2015 Boston Trip

We visited Boston for the first time and went to visit Brian, Kisha, and the rest of the family. Heres some footage of their cool yard, and zipline of course. Maybe Megan can post some of the pictures since I put together this video...

January Charleston Trip

About 8 months ago, a couple of Steve's siblings came out to visit us in Spartanburg, SC and by Spartanburg, I mean Charleston because there is NOTHING in Spartanburg. Really, not even a Chili's. And apparently it is nicknamed "Murderburg," which Steve failed to mention before he moved us cross-country for his intern year AND he didn't even tell me until we moved to Georgia 2 months ago.

Steve's siblings kept saying that they wanted to come visit us and really they should have come when we lived outside of Austin because we had the best restaurants and there was actually good stuff to see, but as it turns out we could not make a compelling case to convince anyone other than his parents to come out and visit us. In fact, the only time one of them did go to Texas was while we were in Utah and they went to a friend's grandmother's birthday party (as in they never met this grandmother before). Anyway, I'll be honest, I did not believe that his siblings would actually follow through because the Glenn family is not known for decisiveness and follow through. True story, several years ago after I thought we had decided on a movie to see while visiting in Utah, there was still disagreement ON OUR WAY TO THE MOVIE about whether we should see another movie playing at a completely different time than when we were driving to the theater. Even after 5 1/2 years of marriage I still have to tell Steve I'm leaving out the door without him.

When they booked their tickets I was genuinely surprised....and then I panicked because I realized we made zero plans because I didn't even think they would come. So we ended up in Charleston in January. Steve's sister, Julie, really wanted to go on a plantation tour, but since it was winter everything was dead. The tour guide was some weird lady (because let's be honest, only weird people are tour guides) who kept emphasizing that this plantation was focused on preservation instead of restoration. Translation: old Civil war era, drafty dump. And I really mean that. There was goose crap EVERYWHERE. The creepiest part of the tour was when we were trying to find the slave graveyard and we kept stepping in these big indentations in the ground only to find out that those were the graves and the caskets had been crushed over time. So I'm pretty sure we have all been cursed.

Me, judging the tour guide for making us wear name tags
Steve pretending to take of picture of his sister Jodie, but really he's creeping on DAN MARINO
Contemplating what it would look like if the roof caved in and we were crushed to death since they didn't want to "restore" anything
Why is Tyler hanging out at the pond by himself?
Me and Steve at the beach when it was 50 degrees outside
We went on a walk on Rainbow Row that had these colorful houses along the waterfront complete with a rich man dressing himself in a tuxedo for the evening (in a non-Peeping Tom sort of way). And apparently they are equally as hoity-toity with their fountains.

Thanksgiving and Christmas 2014

My sister got an Airedale Terrier last year named Sally, who I met for the first time at Thanksgiving. Steve was working nights, so I decided to drive up to North Carolina and leave Steve to fend for himself. Obviously, I was very excited to meet Sally.
I am not sure if she has her mouth open because she is excited or I am inadvertently straggling her.
Sally was very excited to help us make rolls by trying to steal the dough.
And what's Thanksgiving without your roll dough rising to look like a butt.
Steve was jealous about not meeting Sally, so he was very excited to meet her at Christmas. So much so that he was carrying her like a baby. And at one point, I am pretty sure I saw him nuzzle her.

Glenn Family Reunion May 2014

Somehow, Steve bamboozled me into going to a family reunion. The conditions of me going were that he take me to the Bodies exhibit and that he take me to a magic show. In hindsight, I should have been more clear about what constitutes a magic show as Steve bought tickets for an amateur magic show with a guy who trains cats (for reals) and dogs. Not that it wasn't an interesting show, I was just hoping to see someone get stabbed through a box. Steve also decided to take a few liberties by buying a Groupon for shooting Zombies, as pictured below.

If you want to see Jodie freak out, go back to last year's Go Pro Video and you will hear her scream after she GENUINELY believed that she was bitten by a Zombie. At least now we know who not to choose for our post-apocalyptic team. Also, as it turns out I can be quite the fast runner with the proper motivation.
I honestly do not know how I have had this picture for over a year and not realized this until now.
Steve was so excited for that cotton candy. Bless his heart.
Outside the Las Vegas temple
I think my favorite part of the reunion was the Bodies exhibit. It actually came to Cincinnati while I was on my mission, but it left before I got permission (thanks for nothing, P-Robb). The coolest part was the vascular system, but since they don't let you take pictures I am borrowing some from the internet.

After the family reunion, we visited my sister Jenn and her family in St. George for a couple of days. Her kids seem to be the only kids that actually like me and I don't seem to make them cry. And they're still too young to realize I'm not cool, so I have that going for me too.

We went on this 6-7 mile hike and her kids actually made it most of the way without being held. It made me look bad because I was thinking about asking Steve for a piggy back ride, but I like to avoid being shown up by toddlers when possible.

I think the best part of this trip was feeding the ducks. That white swan kept pecking the other ducklings to steal their bread, so the kids started chucking bread at the swans head and they hit it with surprising accuracy. I was waiting for the swan to come chasing after us and a clip of it ending up on America's Funniest Home Videos.

I think this is the one picture I got of Steve wakeboarding. Never ask me to man your camera. There will likely be nothing on it.

That time I went to NYC...Over a year ago

Yep, I am finally getting around to blogging about that trip. Mostly because I am transitioning in my job, so I don't have a lot whole else to do during the day for the next week and I need proof for Steve that I did not sit around using Netflix all day watching shows about conspiracy theories or blowing out our sound system while watching Inception. Although, if I'm being honest, I am surprised our speakers have made it 5 years.

About a month before I graduated last year, my mother-in-law wanted all the "girls" in the family to go on a group trip to New York, which I had never been to (unless you count that time I had to go through customs on my way back from Armenia that was super awkward). Anyway, I never go on vacation while in school EVER, but I consented to go and I somehow convinced people that we should go see After Midnight starring DULE HILL!!!!! This was the highlight of the trip and I may have accidentally shouted "Gus" from the audience. And I'd like to believe at one point he stared right at me (and knew that I was the biggest Psych fan), but there's a good chance he was staring at everyone in the audience.

And I also got to fulfill my life dream of eating a cream-filled Cronut. I ate this on the plane ride home and used my finger to wipe the bag clean because I don't believe in wasting good food.
This was all of us after our sweaty Central Park bike ride and before I ate a pretzel the size of my face.
I can't believe Steve and I have been married over 5 years and he has never told me that I look like Quasimodo when I ride a bike. Not that it would motivate me to change my posture, it just would have been nice to know.
9/11 Memorial. I was surprised that people were as quiet and respectful as they were.
Another sweaty picture after we climbed the Statue of Liberty. I'll be honest, I was a little surprised the statue was not bigger.

And of course, New York
There were a couple things I was bummed about. One being that I did not get to go to the Chip Shop in Brooklyn where they BATTER AND DEEP FRY PIZZA AND TWINKIES!!!!! I told Steve that I needed him to take me back so I can eat there. I am also sad that I did not take the bread basket at some Italian restaurant we ate at. The bread was amazing and if I had been there with Steve, I would have made him request a doggie bag that would have been full of just bread. But seeing as how this was my first vacation with Steve's family, I was trying to make them believe that I have good manners and I don't always think with my stomach (both of which are lies).

Behold Your Future Old People (that includes you, Mom and Dad)

So I have been working at a new job the last 3 months doing Medicaid case management for older adults so that they can stay in their home/apartments instead of moving to a nursing home. I have clients that literally live in the middle of nowhere and some that live in cities. Most of the clients I have that live in cities typically live in apartment complexes similar to Fort Knox, but I haven't decided yet if it's to keep people out or keep the old people in. I have to go visit them in their homes before they can be enrolled in the program to receive services. In October I had to enroll almost 30 people in the program and these are not short visits. The visits are 2-3 hours long and sometimes 4 hours if you get an old person that doesn't want to let you leave (in a lonely way, not a serial killer way-not yet anyway). There was one day where I had to complete THREE of these long visits that I also had to do 3+ hours of documentation for afterwards and I was so tired by the time I got to the third visit at an apartment building. My eyelids were drooping until I got into the elevator and saw this:
Genius idea. Next year I'm putting one outside my grandma's front door.
Then my eyes got huge and I choked on my breath. Thankfully I was alone and decided that I would take a picture with my phone so that I could blog about it. And then I thought, "Dude, who puts a skeleton in an elevator in an apartment building full of old people?" And then I got super bummed because there were no old people getting into or out of the elevator when I was using it and I would have really enjoyed seeing an old person get scared like this:

...And Then There Were None

I like watching mysteries/thrillers/stuff that gives you nightmares, which is a terrible habit because I have very vivid dreams that have on more than one occasion scared Steve when I wake up screaming that someone is trying to kill me.  It's usually Steve rolled over on sheets that restrict my movement, so in a way it serves him right.  A couple weeks ago two of my sisters were talking about a British series called Endeavor so I thought I would try it out.  Steve and I watched the first season because the second season started airing on PBS this month, but I watched the most recent episode by myself because Steve was working nights at the hospital (even though it looked freaky from the previews).  This was a terrible decision.  Basically a bunch of murders happen at this spooky looking mansion in the late 1800's and more murders were happening that appeared to involve ghosts.  It took me several minutes to psych myself up to go upstairs to bed and after I flipped the light switch the light at the top of the stairs flickered and then went out (cue serial killer and creaky stairs)!  I remember thinking, "I'm pretty sure this same scene happens in every scary movie I've seen and I always scream at the people to not go where it's unlit and creepy, they do it anyway, and then they die.  Every time.  Ugh."  I did eventually go upstairs, but I brought my laptop to hit anybody over the head and pushed Charlie up the stairs in front of me because the family pet has to take one for the team sometimes.  Needless to say, I had to watch an episode of Parks and Rec before I could go to bed.

Now I am the Master

Last month Steve (finally) and I graduated from school.  So that makes Steve a doctor and me a master.  You can just call me The Master.  Like so, but better looking:
Don't make me social work you.
But really though guys, here are some of our real graduation pictures:
Steve and Joe after being hooded in robes of a false priesthood.

Us post-graduation since we weren't able to go to each other's.  Who designed these hats?

Us and my parents

Picture taken without me because my dad accidentally was taking pictures of himself and did not know how to reverse the camera.

In Keeping with the Mother's Day Tradition

So, I hate sappy things. A LOT.  Sometimes Steve does sappy things just to make me uncomfortable.  I hate it.  Anyway, I'm sure you can all imagine how I feel about Mother's Day.  Which is why I only send cards that somewhat traumatize my mom and may at times border on inappropriate, but I think these cards build character.  Occasionally, Steve has to say things like, "Maybe your mom won't appreciate that as much as you do."  Around Mother's Day a few years ago I decided to confess some of my childhood stories that my mom was unaware of because she's over 1200 miles away and caller ID is standard now.  Plus, there's that whole statute of limitations thing.  So in keeping with that tradition, I present to you the failed attempt to teach her children manners.

As a kid I used to burp a lot and it was mostly to bother my mom because I felt that it was my job to terrorize her.  I once told her that God told me that was my whole job on earth and I'm sure you can figure out how that went down.  She always got after me for my bad manners, but the thing is that I was very well-behaved at other people's houses and usually ate better than some of their kids.  In fact, I usually only burped with friends when there was some kind of contest to be won.  However, my mom decided that the three youngest children needed an intervention and used the guise of FHE to implement it.  This is what it was:

Eddie Cat as in etiquette, not a man dressed as a cat named Eddie.  I felt so deceived.  So one deceit deserved another.  My mom thought she had this genius plan of making us watch the video before we could get our treat of Moose bars, which are essentially the poor man's version of Creamies popsicles.  What my mom had not planned on was someone coming to the door.  Our house was a split level with the TV downstairs, meaning that my mom had to go upstairs to answer the door.  I took the opportunity to start fast forwarding through the movie.  As soon as I heard her coming back down the stairs, I hit play and sat back on the couch.  About 10 minutes after she got back the movie ended to which she replied, "That was shorter than I thought it would be."  To deflect her comment, I immediately said it was time for our Moose Bars and that was that.  Every time I saw that tape on the shelf after that I laughed to myself about how I outsmarted my mom for a popsicle.  Moral of the story: Never get between a Sears kid and their treats.  That's serious business.

Another One Bites the Dust

During spring break this year, Steve and I went to my sister's wedding.  My sister and brother-in-law stayed with their kids with me at Steve's house.  Their kids decided that they loved his parents' princess room and even Michael loved the Cinderella shoes with lights that flash as you walk.  Here's some pics from the trip.

My niece and nephew checking out the dead spider floating on the water.

The children thinking that a pool party would be way more fun.
The reception was at the Springville Art Museum. This was called "Star Warry Fight."

Ophthalmology Residency

We've told some, but not all, so I wanted to announce on here that I matched into Ophthalmology residency (Eye surgeon training to those not in the medical field)! We matched to the Medical College of Georgia/Georgia Regents University Ophthalmology program in Augusta, GA. Augusta is about 2 hours east of Atlanta. We'll be starting there in July of 2015 and I'll find out where I will be for my internship year (beginning in July 2014) on March 21 - the official match day of everyone else in medicine.

Die Kashi

Nearly four years of marriage has taught me many important lessons. One of these is that my role in this relationship is to be the human garbage disposal. I am to finish any and all scraps, whether left over scraps at the table, or left over random items in our pantry.

My name is Steve, and I am a Costcoholic. I just can't live without Costcohol. My lovely wife Megan is also a Costcoholic. This means that when we buy things from Costco our brains are wired, whether right or wrong, to believe that whatever item we bought tastes better, is less expensive, and is of greater quality because we bought it from Costco. This also means that we enable each other in our addiction.

One of our purchases about a year ago was a box of 40 or so Kashi brand protein bars. Kashi is by all means a quality brand that produces healthy, quality cereals and other foods. Although compared to other protein bars Kashi proteins bars taste pretty good, they are still protein bars. We bought them believing that they would provide a healthy snack that would leave us more full during the day. I neglected to account for the fact that Megan would eat 4-5 protein bars, while garbage disposal man would have to jump on the grenade that is 30-35 dirt flavored wannabe candy/granola bars.

What makes matters worse is they seemed to be hidden in different parts of our pantry and cupboards. Leading me to believe that I was eating the last one on Monday of this last week. I announced to Megan that night that the Kashi bars were finally gone. Then I found another one in our pantry. I ate it on Tuesday and announced again to Megan that the Kashi bars were finally dead. Here is my correspondence with Megan Wednesday afternoon after surveying our "candy jar":

Despite Megan's attempt to hide these land mines around our house, I can now finally declare that the Kashi protein bars finally dead.
